Mon 4/22–Tue 4/30
Join us at SKATEYOGI's Spring Break Camp for an exciting opportunity to explore the world on a skateboard! If you are new, this camp is the perfect way to experience all the fun that SKATEYOGI has to offer before committing to our summer camp program. If you are a regular, it gives you a chance to learn more tricks and go on adventures! Our indoor facilities feature engaging modular ramps for skaters of all levels. At SKATEYOGI, sustainability is enhanced at its core – We prioritize sustainable travel by utilizing foot power (often boosted by skateboards) and public transportation. It also gives a great sense of independence for our students to learn how to get to skate spots.

Eid Mubarak! Wishing everyone who celebrates the holiday a happy Eid!
Here at SKATEYOGI, our sold-out day camp crew from both PLG and Williamsburg decided to meet up at Broadway Junction to have a mega sesh! We had so much fun. And yesterday, our spring afterschool program at Brooklyn Collegiate kicked off! This school is very fortunate to be right next to Ocean Hill Skatepark, a brand new skatepark in Brooklyn! Is your school interested in adding a skateboarding afterschool program in the fall? Contact us! Part 1: Skate the Foundry
Over the spring holiday weekend, we took a skate trip down to Philly. I had such a fun time that I decided to highlight some of the fun spots we visited in a 3-part series! First up on our trip was a visit to our friends at Skate the Foundry – a fellow skate school hosting classes and camps as well as open skate at their rad indoor park. The space consists of three distinct skate areas so you can float from session to session. Walking in the front door there’s a small shop area with an awesome mini bowl behind it. This was my favorite area of the whole park. Kind of like the mini ramp version of a wooden bowl with lots of lines and fun corners. Next to this is the street area with lots of room to push and roll around on the bigger ramps on the far sides and smaller portable ramps for different configurations. Lastly, tucked to the side of the street area is a room entirely filled with a big mini ramp. Probably close to 6 feet tall, I’m sure this ramp sees some serious action from transition skaters not afraid of heights. If you’re in the area check their schedule and catch an open skate to try out their fun space! Kevin Part 2 in our next week's newsletter! Save 10% when you register for summer camp by 3/31/24!
You are welcome to buy camp credits if you are not sure which week to register yet! Email us! Late pickup (5-5:30pm) available this summer! Join me this Monday 3/25 at the Community Engagement Meeting to demonstrate how much our neighborhood needs a place that can host multiple recreational activities, education and culture while promoting sustainability.
Background Story Pre-Pandemic days back in 2019, a petition circulated to have an environmentally focused skate park built in the area of Prospect Park. (Btw you can still sign the petition here!) From that catalyst, the idea of a Brooklyn Skate Garden was born. I had the chance to attend some of the early meetings and SKATEYOGI participated in events with Brooklyn Skate Garden's parent organization, the Pablo Ramirez Foundation. Fast forward to a few months ago...we were all delighted to see the idea sprout into reality with the announcement of funding for this project at Mount Prospect Park. In line with the rich cultural institutions such as Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and Brooklyn Central Library, this project would enhance the park into a safe learning space for kids and teens in the neighborhood to connect with nature as well as the greater Brooklyn skate community. Support Our Future Skaters There has been some opposition when neighbors learned that there would be a skatepark on Eastern Parkway and didn't understand the full intent of the project. For our younger skaters attending the meeting, it can be a great opportunity to experience civics and public participation first hand. My 3 year-old son is very excited about this project so he'll be there to support as well. As a resident of this area for almost 20 years, I can personally say there is very little to skate nearby despite the high concentration of skateboarders and sincerely hope that this park can get revitalized. Hope to see you there! Kevin “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” – Mark Twain
Recently, we were interviewed by one of our colleagues Brett, who runs a skateboarding school in Philadelphia called Skate The Foundry, for his podcast. It was a rare opportunity to talk about the business of running a skateboarding school. So easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day work, losing sight of where you used to be and where you are now. Honestly, it was really refreshing to reflect and share our vision of what's to come with SKATEYOGI! If you are curious, here's a link! As we embarked on this path on opening a skateboarding school a decade ago, we also got to see some of our students jump into their own dreams along the way, all because they felt encouraged to follow their gut seeing people like us take a bit of risk. Get used to being uncomfortable! Kevin What's great about skateboarding? Most of the time we are failing. Even pros do not land their tricks all the time. This is simply because we are continuously pushing ourselves to do more. This makes the moment when we finally land on a trick so memorable. (Sometimes it takes months or even years to get it right!)
As we hear about some people trying to shield their children from experiencing failure and misery in their lives, here we are, embracing failure. Getting used to things not going your way only makes us stronger mentally and physically – Fall and get back up. Grit is one of the greatest gifts of skateboarding! One more try, you almost got it! Kevin P.S. Summer Camp Early Bird Offer is ending in 3 weeks on 3/31/24. Start planning now! Can you believe tomorrow is the first day of March already? Spring is just around the corner. We are planning some fun events like parents night out and adult day camps...please stay tuned! Our Wed adult open skate sessions are going strong!
See you out there! Kevin Just a friendly reminder: Kids' Winter series classes take a break until Fri 2/23. Classes resume on Sat 2/24.
