"Ok, paddle, paddle harder, ok now, go, go, go!"
The liquid ground underneath pushes forward and my hands grip the sides of the board, I arch my back upward dog and my feet pop up into a wide stance. I'm motionless, keeping balance to the energy of the wave propelling me across the surface of the water. Maybe three seconds total, but the moment remains, etched into the depths of memory.
As a lifelong skateboarder, It was a very special experience to go surfing for the first time this past Tuesday out on Rockaway Beach. It was like a pilgrimage to the origin of my passion, with plenty of opportunity for Darwinian metaphors and spiritual insight at the oceans edge. I had met up with a dad friend after we both dropped our kids off at the preschool they both attend. He's an experienced surfer so he had all the gear and showed me the basics in the mellow conditions.
Reconnecting with the thrill of the initial stoke as an adult beginner has reminded me how rad it felt to first discover skateboarding all those years ago. We live our lives from day to day concerned mostly with the length or passage of time but in these flow states that root us to the present we find a depth of quality that transcends measurement. Whether it's bombing down a hill on your skateboard, catching a wave or being fully present in a sun salutation... let's shred!
Hard to believe this is the last weekend of the current round of SKATEYOGI Groms and Shredders series! Been a rad 6-weeks watching the little skaters grow! We'll be taking a break for the Memorial Day weekend and announcing the new schedule very soon. With the summer approaching we'll be looking to have more single classes for more flexibility with everyone's schedule. Stay tuned!
SKATEYOGI Summer Camp 2015
Campers have started to sign up for the SKATEYOGI summer camp but there's still room! For 4 weeks this July we'll be using Skate Brooklyn as our home base and exploring the local skate spots! For grades K-5, absolute beginners welcome and you can pick and choose your weeks. Each week will have a different theme in afternoon SKATEYOGI Lab sessions with hands-on demonstrations and projects including physics, engineering, arts and photography. Read all about it here! Hit reply with any questions :)
SKATEYOGI presents Skate Brooklyn Adult Swim!
Every Thursday evening from 8pm to midnight we're kicking the kids out of the "pool" so the adults can have some fun! Everyone is welcome regardless of ability to come hang out and skate the ramp. We even have some extra boards and gear to borrow if you need it. Nothing but good vibes for anyone who wants to try out skateboarding.
