Last August, hanging out with Chopper at his shop, Whatever, home of the Osaka Daggers, this Italian skater Andrea Di Liddo came by and we all chilled, watched some skate videos, and lurked around Osaka for a minute. He told me about Chef Family, this skate crew he rides for back in Milan and a little about the scene. That same day my wife sent a message saying she had found a great deal for December airfare to... Milan! So, I replied "Perfect! I just met a skater from there!" Funny when things like that happen.
Fast forward 6 months and here we are in Italy for the SKATEYOGI family / skate trip! A friend's niece studying in Venice is letting us crash at her place while her and her roommates are away so soon we will be on a train from Milan to Venice to spend 6 nights there... budget style :) We only got to spend one night in Milan but thanks to some advance intelligence we booked a spot across the street from Milano Centrale Train station, a paradise of smooth flatground and every kind of ledge imaginable.
Fought the jet lag and went out for a little sesh last night, met some local skaters, shared some cheap beers and had fun communicating through the universal language of skateboarding. Met these two skaters from the Philippines, now in Milan for a few years. They told me about how even though skateboarding is getting more popular in their country it's still not accepted by their society. Maybe an idea for a future trip.
Now we're off to Venice! Gonna try to keep a skate travel log going on the website so stay tuned for live updates. Namaskate!
