Come Try SKATEYOGI This Weekend
Just a day after bruising a knee, and I’m already aching to get back on my board. What is it about skateboarding that makes me so eager to skate (even) after falling? It could be that skateboarding is somehow healing within itself. Though rest is necessary, as is knowing one’s own limits, getting back up and skating again is sometimes the best cure... for any ache.

Sign up and enjoy all that skateboarding can do for you.

This weekend skateboarding will be in the Olympics for the first time! We've come a long way since my early days in the mid 90's skating behind suburban shopping centers and getting chased away by shopkeepers and security guards.

The allure of skating to me back then was the freedom and creativity. With no clear objective the possibilities were endless. But even before that time, skate contests have been a part of our culture as a showcase for pushing what is possible on a skateboard. There are some that think skateboarding in the Olympics dilutes its purity. Personally, I am thrilled thinking of all the people out there – those who will get that initial spark to try skateboarding after seeing it on the world stage.

Even as an Olympic sport, skateboarding is so much more and the only true way to understand is to grab a board and join the fun!

Namaskate!

Our crew had a very busy and exciting weekend!

On Friday, Liv @Sk8babes organized a fantastic skate clinic for people of marginalized genders. SKATEYOGI joined the fun as an event sponsor, donating some prizes to make the event extra special!

Next on the agenda, was the Skate With Your Mom event! Big thanks to all the moms that came out to skate with their kids. You are officially the coolest group of moms we have ever met!

Finally, Sunday brought another great day at the Greenpoint Terminal Market. The market is quickly becoming the staff's favorite place to work and skate. We are so pleased to continue our GTM series in June!

6 Easy Ways to Save the Planet While You Skate!

1. Skate/Bike to the Spot - Save the ozone layer by choosing an eco friendly mode of transportation 🚴‍♀️ 🛹

2. BYOB - Bring Your Own (Reusable Water) Bottle. Reusable water bottles keep your water colder for longer! It's a win-win situation! 🚰

3. Pack in / Pack out - Don't be a skatepark litter bug 🐞

4. Reduce - Lessen your impact on the environment by only replacing parts your skateboard when it's necessary. Buying a complete setup is awesome, but once you have the trucks, wheels, etc. get in the habit of switching out parts one at a time 🛠

5. Reuse - Donate old gear to friends or skate shops. If you want to switch out a part of your skateboard that still has life left in it, go to the skatepark and see if anyone might need it more than you did!

6. Recycle - Many artists/skaters are now upcycling broken skate decks to create furniture and art. You don't have to be a professional to try this at home!

Put Some Spring in Your Step and Start Committing to New Tricks

4/15/2021

For most skaters, committing to new tricks can be one of the most difficult parts of skateboarding. Committing to a trick means to fully attempt it (no intentionally putting one foot onto the ground, no bailing, full send!).

It is to be expected that committing can sometimes lead to a fall or two. However for most, this is a necessary step to landing a new trick.

Here are some tips to stop the commitment issues and start landing some new tricks!

1. Break the trick down. Most things you do on a skateboard require several muscles to engage and work together in one moment. Before fully committing to a trick, practice each movement individually.

2. Find your mantra or motto. Choose a phrase that fills you with confidence and reminds you of the reason you are trying to land the trick in the first place. Only repeat this phrase to yourself on tries that you plan to commit to. (Examples - Just do it! Right NOW!)

3. Set up a selfie cam! Let your camera roll while you practice the trick. Watching yourself attempt the trick can help you to visualize landing something new. It can also give you a little push to commit, knowing you'll catch the first land on video!

4. Be prepared for the fall. If you think about the way your body might hit the ground before an attempt, it will be easier to catch yourself.

Pro tip - Remember everything takes time! Be patient with yourself. If today's not the day then come back to it tomorrow (or during your next session).

BREAKING NEWS!

Suez Canal repairs will create the world's biggest temporary skate spot!

⁣
The SP (SKATEYOGI Press) has obtained plans for the canal to be emptied to repair retaining wall damage sustained by the Ever Given. This temporary draining of the canal will provide skateboarders first-time access to the legendary Suez Banks, rumored to be the longest continuous banked wall spot with additional skate features created by the unique truss concrete formations. Local SP correspondents confirm the surface is unusually smooth due to the naturally occurring limestone aggregate in the finish layer. ⁣
⁣
These repairs are scheduled for early July so start making your travel plans! ️ ⁣

SKATEYOGI is taking advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with a special two-week skate retreat to #SkateTheSuez!

Skating Together as Women, Teachers & Friends

In celebration of Women’s History Month, SKATEYOGI Instructors Shauny, Hannah & Liv put together an edit of recent clips!

While this month has been focused on Women's History, taking a look at representation in skateboarding highlights a larger societal theme. That theme being, the importance of representation and respect. Both on the skateboard and off, it is our responsibility to show current and future generations a positive way to treat others.

Let's carry this message of respect with us wherever we go. In light of the recent events in this country, please remember your actions matter and they make an impact on the world around you.
