"Interested in getting a board but not sure what size?"
Walking in to a skate shop to pick out a board for the first time can be a bit overwhelming with all the specifications you have to choose from.
One important decision to make is board width. Among the standard popsicle shaped skateboard decks, this is the defining measurement.
A narrower deck allows for tighter turns and more technical tricks while a wider board offers more stability.
For kids ages 6 and up
We recommend around a 7.5" deck. Even younger skaters (Tots ages 2-5) can benefit from a narrower and often shorter deck around 7-7.25".
For teens and adults
Standard decks range from 7.75-8.5" depending on personal preference. We've seen a lot of beginners do well on a 8" deck, offering a good mix of turning and stability.
One nice thing about having our skate space and shop is that you can try out different setups to figure out what works best for you!
See you on the ramp!
"Hey SKATEYOGI, where can I go skate in NYC?"
Although this year's winter seems to have no ending–when will this cold weather end?! – we can surely see signs of spring all around us. Cherry blossoms at the Brooklyn Museum and BBG are in their full bloom. We have started to see more and more people walking into our space, asking for starter boards. One of the FAQs we get this season in particular is where to go skating in the city. There are countless spots in NYC after all.
The best bet is to start off at your local park with a little bit of flatground to get comfortable pushing around.
Oftentimes, schoolyards are open outside of school hours and have lots of space to practice your basics.
When you're ready to explore the plethora of skate parks in the city we recommend going in the morning hours before the crowds show up. That way you can get a feel for the layout without fear of crashing into someone.
Just a heads up that there will be no classes at SKATEYOGI this coming weekend. Adults, please come to our Wednesday classes instead!
We will be closing early on Sunday 3/18. 9am Tots class & 10am 6-week series class are held as usual. All the classes in the afternoon are cancelled for the day. Please come see us at House of Vans or at Brooklyn Camp Expo in Williamsburg!
Our day camp and afterschool are in session as usual, but we canceled all the evening classes due to inclement weather.
Adult students – hope to see you at our weekend classes on Sat or Sun at 1pm!
Stay safe out there!!!
SKATEYOGI on News 12!
Hi SKATEYOGI friends and families!
The good folks at News 12 came to check out the action during our Day Camp last Wednesday! They did a little piece that has been airing around the NYC metro region. Check it out here but please disregard the part where they call me a "former yoga teacher" lol. Not sure where they got that from. (I'm actually a former environmental professional, but that's a story for another day.)
It was a rad week of mid-winter camps! Check our schedule and save your spot for upcoming school holiday camps! Looking forward to more outdoor adventures as Spring approaches :)
Next round of 6-week kids series will start this weekend! There's still a few spots left. Please register now!
Last call for Summer Camp early bird registration! Sign up now to hold your spot and save $50. Space is limited and last year we did sell out so sign up now and lock in your week(s)!
Psssst: be sure to bookmark the HOV events page to RSVP for our monthly series. It's compliments of Vans but space is limited. Our next one is March 18 and they usually open up RSVPs two weeks in advance. Registration's not open yet but should be pretty soon ;)
