Skate and Be Free!

Happy Independence Day!

Getting some chill time this weekend in NYC after a busy couple of weeks including a skate charity trip to Cuba, camping with Shut Skateboards in Vermont, and a radical first week of SKATEYOGI Summer Camp. Looks like the city is drying up and the clouds are clearing so it's about time to relax by the pool with some cold ones... an empty skate pool with smooth transitions of course ;)

Had an awesome first week with the SKATEYOGI summer camp crew! The campers got a taste of what typical skate days with the homies are like: meet up at that shop, gear up and head out to the local skate spots, skating, hanging out, having lunch outdoors... and sprinkled in there we learned all about physics and how it applies to skateboarding. Started off with gravity and forces, moved on to applying the concept of Friction to grinds and slides, then how to pick lines through the park using potential and kinetic energy. We concluded by putting it all together to study the complex physics of the ollie (where you snap the board to jump with it into the air). In the next three weeks we'll be doing modules on Engineering, Arts, and Photography. And it's not too late to sign up! We've got 2 more spots in Week 2 and 5 more spots in Weeks 3 and 4. Click here for the sign up links.

Here's some pics from Week 1:

We figured out how skateboarders like to take advantage of gravity, starting at the point with the highest potential energy to fly through the park.

One day we took the subway to Owl's Head Skatepark in Bayridge, rocking the SKATEYOGI camp t-shirts they made the day before :)

SKATEYOGI Classes
SKATEYOGI classes return next weekend on an abbreviated summer schedule. Adult beginners on Saturdays at 11am; SKATEYOGI Kids at 12:30pm. Come shred the air conditioned ramp! Sign up at skateyogi.com/classes

SKATEYOGI presents Skate Brooklyn Adult Swim!
Every Thursday evening from 8pm to midnight we're kicking the kids out of the "pool" so the adults can have some fun! Everyone is welcome regardless of ability to come hang out and skate the ramp. We even have some extra boards and gear to borrow if you need it. Nothing but good vibes for anyone who wants to try out skateboarding.

Girls Riders Org Skate Park Meetup at Owl's Head Skatepark this Sunday (Noon-3pm)
Girls Riders Organization (GRO NYC) is hosting all-girls skate meetups at parks around the city this summer. This Sunday the NYC GRO Crew will be at Owl's Head Skatepark for a supportive session for lady skaters of all abilities. Details here!

Video of the Week: Shut Skateboards Frendly Gathering Trip
Made a little edit from last weekend's trip up to the Frendly Gathering with SHUT Skateboards, Gnarmads, BB Social Club, SKATEYOGI, and THEGOODLIFE! Good times!

Here's to wishes for freedom from oppression for people everywhere. Peace!
Kevin
