Happy Pride Month!
Our vision at SKATEYOGI is a world where our differences are celebrated with peace and respect. For pride month we celebrate that everyone belongs in skateboarding regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. Adults, join us next Wednesday, June 11 for a free open skate session in celebration of Pride Month. Our friends at Drag Experiences will be joining us with special guest drag queen, Liz B. N. who will do a performance and skate with us. Admission is complimentary for this special event to come skate or just hang, but please RSVP. See you soon! Kevin

We are delighted to share that the full 27-minute episode of "Your Body on Sport" featuring Simon, Fritz and I at SKATEYOGI Williamsburg is live! In this Daily Mail Sports segment, we talk skateboarding basics with an emphasis on how different parts of the body are used when we skate. Once you get past the attention drawing video title and the intro depicting a broken wrist, the bulk of the video is friendly and informative. I think the ideal viewer would be the parent of a skater or an adult just getting into skateboarding (which I guess is a lot of the people reading this newsletter!) We had lots of fun filming this. Enjoy! Kevin IMPORTANT
SKATEYOGI is Closed from Sat 5/24-Mon 5/26 Memorial Day Fri 5/23 Classes & Open Skate As Usual Sat 5/24 No Classes | Closed Sun 5/25 No Classes | Closed Mon 5/26 No Classes | Closed Tue 5/27 Classes As Usual SKATEYOGI will be closed for the upcoming holiday weekend, and there are no classes. Our shop will be closed too. Have a nice holiday weekend! SKATEYOGI Sure, skateparks are great, but "street skating" is all about making use of the environment around you. It doesn't take much to have fun on your skateboard. Take a simple curb for instance. There are countless tricks you can do and some will translate directly to other obstacles such as ledges or the coping of a ramp. Here's good basic trick to start with:
Try a Nose Stall This trick is good for anyone that is comfortable pushing and can do some kickturns. Eventually you can turn the nose stall into a noseslide by approaching at an angle or try different combinations such as reverts and shuvits. Step 1 Approach the curb straight on (perpendicular) and adjust your feet so your back foot is on the tail and your front foot is all the way up on the nose (this is important!). Step 2 Just as you get to the curb, shift your weight back to raise your nose up onto the curb. Step 3 Once your wheels make contact with the edge of the curb shift your weight forward onto the nose to balance and stop. This is the "stall" part of the trick. Step 4 To get off the curb, shift your weight back to the tail and use the momentum to ride backwards away from the curb. Step 5 Ride away with a smile! Try it next time! So much fun having Ramiro, our good friend (and former SKATEYOGI instructor), come and do a community based mural project with us for our outdoor ramp area at Williamsburg! It was such a cool process getting drawings for the design from our students and translating them to the large format. We are so happy with the new look for our outdoor ramp area. We hope you enjoy it! All the adventures we had during Spring Recess camps were an awesome sneak peak to Summer camp coming soon! We can’t wait to kickoff the skate fun for our favorite season in June! See you out there! Kevin Come Paint A Mural This Fri 4/18 Thank you so much for those who submitted artwork to inspire our new mural at SKATEYOGI! In celebration of our 12th anniversary, we are painting a mural in the outdoor ramp area at SKATEYOGI Williamsburg on Fri 4/18 in partnership with Ramiro Davaro-Comas. If anyone, who is not registered to attend camp, would like to come paint the mural, feel free to stop by our Williamsburg location between 10am-12pm this Fri 4/18! If your child is registered to attend camp with us, your child is participating. Our PLG camp crew will visit Williamsburg that day as part of their field trip. IMPORTANT

The first ever class (slide 1) was taught in collaboration with Urban Asanas yoga studio in Brower Park, which was quite literally adult skateboarding classes for yogis, hence the name SKATEYOGI. The origin of our name also comes from the similarities between yoga and skateboarding: moving meditation, the mental and physical aspect, and solo practice within a community. This philosophy reminds us to have fun, be creative and treat each other with respect. The rest of the slides are from a class I taught this past Sunday, without realizing it was 12 years to the day from our first ever class. We coincidentally mixed up some yoga in our freestyle skate tricks. Feeling blessed to share the joy of skating with our students all these years Here’s to another dozen and more! Kevin and Yasuyo
