Que bola, asere!
...the Cuban amigos say this as they extend a hand for a heart felt hand slap, fist bump, eye contact and a warm smile, the words translated meaning "What's up, homie!" And with mutual love and respect you're welcomed into the familia of Amigo Skate Cuba centered around skateboarding but fully encompassing the culture of street artists, musicians, BMXers and skateboarders of every discipline.
We showed up to this school to do a skate demo and clinic for the kids but when administration saw the film crew they cancelled the event. Outside the school we drew with chalk on a wall and after writing SKATEYOGI, NAMASKATE and GNARMADS the teacher in green managed to get me in for a little yoga class for her and some students. With plenty of yoga experience but no teacher training, I managed to have them do some sun salutations and basic asanas, opening and closing chanting Om and described the philosophy of meditation behind the practice. Really moving experience!
The last week down in Havana was a transformative chapter with rich memories and lasting friendships formed. Still trying to process and decipher how to properly express the experience. For now, little snippets have popped up on the SKATEYOGI instagram feed so check in there for some glimpses.
After returning from Cuba yesterday, I'm packing for the road again, leaving before dawn with BB Social Club, the Gnarmads and Shut Skateboards in a van bound for the Frendly Gathering, a festival up in VT where we'll be hosting a miniramp jam. Looking forward to spreading the fresh stoke from Cuba to all the Frends. After a week off the grid I'm still trying to catch up on emails. Thank you for your patience!!
With so many options to enjoy your weekends outdoors during the summer it's hard to imagine coming indoors for a skateboard class. But we'll still be offering a limited schedule if you want to beat the heat and get in some air conditioned shredding. Classes resume after the holiday weekend starting July 11 and continuing for 4 weeks through August 1. Every Saturday we'll have the adult class at 11am and an open level kids class at 12:30 Sign up here!
Private and semi-private lessons are also an option if you'd like some more personal attention on the ramp or at a spot of your choosing. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org to set something up.
