Good morning! As the weather dips low giving us a taste of the winter I'm reminded of an outdoor session at Brower park last year with some of the original adult skate yogis. We were talking about how skateboarding had begun to influence other aspects of their lives, getting them to loosen up and be more confident and daring. One had a story of skating to yoga class in the morning and some dude passing by said something like "you don't see that often" her quick reply "get used to it!" was an indication of her truly not caring what other people thought or expected of her. Very rad! The class was originally called skate yogis as a reference to the yoga studio Urban Asanas that it was taught in connection with. The name evolved into SKATEYOGI as a better way of capturing the overall concept, an approach to skateboarding similar to the practice of yoga, a moving meditation and creative expression, without the ego and cool guy attitude. Every one of you is SKATEYOGI. The community, the spaces, the sessions, family and friendships. I'm so grateful for everyone that has been a part of this and really looking forward to spending 2015 with all of you. We're thinking about what's in store for next year, some potential ideas include parent/child classes, afterschool programs, skate day trips, social events, skate/yoga weekend retreats.... lots of possibilities! If anything sounds rad or you've got any other ideas hit reply to say hi. The light in me bows to the light in you... Namaskate!! Sign up for SKATEYOGI classes! Video of the Week: PJ Ladd's Wonderful, Horrible Life Flicking my finger through the skate interwebs I was pleasantly surprised to see this part up as a Thrasher "Classic". Funny because this was exactly from my prime skate days back in Boston. Coliseum was the shop of the moment and if you skated in Boston you'd just end up skating with these dudes on a pretty regular basis. This was a shop video that was better than most big brand videos of the time and instantly catapulted a bunch of these guys to skate stardom. Everyone in the Boston skate scene caught some of the hype and it seemed skating got a little more serious afterwards. But now thinking back whenever I'd bump into PJ he always just seemed intensly focused on his skating for it's own sake, internally motivated and quiet, like some kind of skate monk. Think there's a lesson in there somewhere... Namaskate!
