Presence is the best present!
While wrapping up the fall semester of skate club at the school I work at, we ended a few minutes early for some circle time to acknowledge the time we had spent together. I reminded the children that each session is unique, even if it's with the same people in the same place, the exact circumstance will never occur again and being conscious of this enriches our daily encounters. This is the Japanese concept of ichi-go ichi-e (traslated directly to "one time, one meeting"), something you'll hear about in Zen meditation or the art of tea ceremony, but it also applies very well to skateboarding.
Last night I was reminded again of this idea at a rad event at Homage Brooklyn's indoor skate facility. A place I go on a regular basis for the old man monday sessions had been transformed into a miniramp jam, art show, fundraiser, coat drive... really good vibrations in that space! Mingling in the crowd, then heading back to the ramp where we speak a physical language, countless sessions, hours, years, translated into a dance of rolling planks on plywood waves.

Video of the Week: KCDC Skate Nights
Continuing the theme of ichi-go ichi-e, I was stoked to see this quick clip posted up capturing some of the magic of last winter's KCDC skate nights. For a few weeks this ramp was set up in a space in the lower east side welcoming the skate community to come inside warm up with a hype mini ramp sesh, music and friends. Then it disappeared into our collective memory. Look closely you'll see me in the yellow shirt slapping high fives.
