Thursday night and another KCDC skate night sesh at the temporary winter wonderland in Long Island City was wrapping up but we still wanted to shred some more, so a friend suggested we go down to Williamsburg to check out the bowl that had been built in Black Bear Bar for the winter. I had really been wanting to check it out so we hopped on the G train then skated a few blocks over to North 6th street and walked in to discover this beautiful piece of skateable art. These skate spots are a necessity in NYC where winter conditions force us inside. Faced with real estate costs and insurance issues these spaces are almost always temporary installations. Something really special about these sessions got me thinking about Tibetan sandpainting where elaborate mandalas are created ceremoniously only to be destroyed shortly after their completion, a demonstration of the "impermanence" of all contingent and compounded phenomena. In other words: Skate and Destroy! Any skater can tell you stories of some skate spot they cherish in their memories that no longer exists physically. The destruction of the spot actually makes it a more permanent fixture in our collective memory, friendships formed through shared sessions. The spots we skate together at SKATEYOGI will not last forever, and our skateboards will eventually break, but the experience will remain. Next SKATEYOGI series starts in 2 weeks! Check the links and details for the next round of series starting the weekend of Feb 21st. If there's a week you know you can't make, let me know and we'll figure out a make up class. And as always we have the drop-in classes. Adults on Saturdays at 11am; Kids on Sundays at 11am. If you need gear we've got boards, helmets and pads of all sizes for you to borrow. For drop-ins still be sure to save your spot since we cap the number of skaters on the ramp. See you there! Girls Riders Organization session at Homage this Sunday GRO is hosting all-girls skate sessions at Homage for the next few months. These are free and open to any girl that wants to skate. They're doing beginner sessions on Sun. Feb 8 and Sun. Mar 8 at 3:30-5:30pm. Video of the Week: orange man presents BOD MOD A friend of mine who teaches at the Homage Skateboard Academy shared this recently and it is AMAZING! A mash-up of art, skating and puppetry. Can't believe it's only gotten 277 views on YouTube. We watched this during skate club 2 weeks ago and wondered what kind of body modification we would want to make skateboarding more interesting.
