SKATEYOGI weekend forecast 1/3: snake becomes horse, winter wonderland (but not for skateboarders)1/3/2014 whatup 2014! We all peaced out year of the snake and as we welcome in the horse, not 3 days in and half the nyc skateboard internets are giving the figurative and literal finger to the current artic embargo on street skating. Some satisfy the itch by chilling with skateboarding's rich cousin, snowboarding. Even if you're not rolling in the dough you can make it happen. We packed a car full of parents on a trip to Mountain Creek in NJ yesterday for their $99 Carload Thursdays deal so that was pretty easy on the wallet. And on the snow day today got my little one out on the slopes of Prospect Park for her first carves on her buddy's mini snowshredder. But for most skateboarders in NYC, the current conditions will mean retreating to the limited indoor facilities available in the city. Don't worry though... Skate Brooklyn classes are still a go for the weekend! Adults on Saturday at 11am; kids on Sunday at 11am. Last week we closed out 2013 with some fun sessions. All the regulars were away for the adults class but two first-time skateyogis came through and had a great time. Both found out about skateyogi through Instagram so keep on hashtagging to spread the word! For the kids class we had some first time ramp riders so we practiced getting up and down the ramp with our boards to simulate a real ramp sesh where you rip one at a time. At the end of class some of the parents and younger siblings even tried shredding the ramp. Good family vibes all around! NYC skateboarders like to throw events and add in the lack of publicly available indoor skate facilities this usually results in a steady stream of ramp jams and open houses at some of the private facilities during the winter. I've been pretty consistently checking out Old Man Mondays at the Homage indoor spot in Gowanus and that's been chill. I like to describe it as an older skaters version of a bowling league. So if you're old or old at heart check the Homage instagram feed for postings, it's been steadily going every week 7-10pm (30+, $5 suggest donation). I heard that House of Vans updated their bowl and will be doing open sessions during the winter. And then hopefully KCDC will continue their winter ramp jams. I'll post more info on these as I hear more. Since we're all snowed in, for this week's video clip I'm posting up Habitat's new vid via Thrasher. It's 25 minutes of the nicely edited amazing skateboarding you'd expect from these guys so put your boots by the fire, grab your hot cocoa and snuggle up to your laptop for this treat. If you've got a stiffer drink you can even play a game where you take a sip every time you see a Brooklyn spot, it's packed with em. Namaskate!
