The Metamorphosis of SKATEYOGI
SKATEYOGI turns 5 this Spring! In anticipation of our anniversary, here's a little analogy from nature to tell the history of SKATEYOGI so far. Let's explore our evolution through the lens of a butterfly's life cycle! A butterfly starts life as a very small egg usually laid on the leaves of plants. In the case of SKATEYOGI, the egg was laid on a tree in Brower Park back in the Spring of 2013 when we taught our first adult beginner skateboarding class in collaboration with Urban Asanas. When the egg hatches the caterpillar emerges and goes straight to work eating the leaf they were born on. This meant hosting more weekend classes until the winter forced us indoors. The SKATEYOGI caterpillar then sought shelter, where we "molted" several times expanding to kids classes, afterschool and summer camp. Last year the concept of SKATEYOGI had reached full weight and formed itself into a chrysalis at 140 Empire Boulevard. From the outside of the chrysalis, it looks as if the caterpillar may be just resting, but the inside is where all the action is. With each project, the parts have undergone a remarkable transformation, called 'metamorphosis' to become a beautiful butterfly. As soon as the butterfly has rested coming out of the chrysalis, it will pump blood into the wings in order to get them working and flapping - then they get to fly! In the fourth and final stage of their lives, adult butterflies are constantly on the look out to reproduce and when a female lays their eggs on some leaves, the butterfly life cycle will start all over. I wonder where the next SKATEYOGI egg will be laid? Looking forward to some more fun sessions this weekend on the new ramp setup! If you haven't stopped by to check it out yet, come through for a weekend class. You may also notice that the sweet sound of our little shredders has been dampened by the addition of echo reducing panels mounted throughout the ramp area. We've even started doing silent time to get things started in circle before each class. Pretty cool! Hope to see you soon! Namaskate! Kevin
