For the first 6 years of our summer camp program, weekly trips to skate parks and spots around the city were a special treat for our campers, and a chance for them to apply their fresh skate skills in a new environment. We are delighted to announce that for Summer 2022 these trips are back!
SKATEYOGI Summer Campers @ PLG and Williamsburg will enjoy weekly trips via public transportation or chartered bus to destinations such as the waterfront mini-snake run at Rockaway Beach Skatepark, the concrete waves of the bowls at Owl's Head or the shaded oasis of obstacles at Golconda. SKATEYOGI Urban Shredders will now be able to add a subway or bus ride to their daily itinerary to unlock an array of skate adventures and truly experience skate life like a NYC skate local. From Chinatown and LES Skatepark to Sarge's and the K Bridge DIY, the possibilities for each day are wide open! Looking forward to all those smiling faces as we embark upon our 9th summer full of skate fun and adventure! See you at Camp! Kevin

I even had the opportunity to give a presentation on Failure and Skateboarding as a lesson in developing camper's resilience.
While we were there we took a break from the conference to check out this nearby DIY skatepark. This spot is a perfect example of Less is More. Something about the simplicity of the layout, the smooth ground, the sparse but well made DIY elements, made this park flow so nice. The locals were very friendly and we found ourselves welcomed into the session. Definitely recommend checking this out if you're ever in the area! As the COVID mask mandates are being modified at the local and state level, we wanted to communicate what SKATEYOGI's protocols are. (Subject to further changes of NYC and CDC regulations.)
MASKS: Our current policy will remain in place for the time being. We are monitoring the situation and will reassess in 2 weeks. As a reminder, our current policy is: Outdoors: Masks are not required. Indoors: Masks are required. Just a day after bruising a knee, and I’m already aching to get back on my board. What is it about skateboarding that makes me so eager to skate (even) after falling? It could be that skateboarding is somehow healing within itself. Though rest is necessary, as is knowing one’s own limits, getting back up and skating again is sometimes the best cure... for any ache. Sign up and enjoy all that skateboarding can do for you. ~Lara (she/they) Lara (pronounced Lada) recently joined the SKATEYOGI team! As a trans-feminine skateboarder, she's many things – a skateboarder, writer, and our in-house horticulturalist... We've come a long way since my early days in the mid 90's skating behind suburban shopping centers and getting chased away by shopkeepers and security guards.
The allure of skating to me back then was the freedom and creativity. With no clear objective the possibilities were endless. But even before that time, skate contests have been a part of our culture as a showcase for pushing what is possible on a skateboard. There are some that think skateboarding in the Olympics dilutes its purity. Personally, I am thrilled thinking of all the people out there – those who will get that initial spark to try skateboarding after seeing it on the world stage. Even as an Olympic sport, skateboarding is so much more and the only true way to understand is to grab a board and join the fun! Namaskate! -Kevin Our crew had a very busy and exciting weekend! On Friday, Liv @Sk8babes organized a fantastic skate clinic for people of marginalized genders. SKATEYOGI joined the fun as an event sponsor, donating some prizes to make the event extra special! Next on the agenda, was the Skate With Your Mom event! Big thanks to all the moms that came out to skate with their kids. You are officially the coolest group of moms we have ever met! Finally, Sunday brought another great day at the Greenpoint Terminal Market. The market is quickly becoming the staff's favorite place to work and skate. We are so pleased to continue our GTM series in June! |
