Winter's officially here... decent dump of snow earlier this week has left the pavement stained with snow melt and ice residue. The brave at heart will bundle up, maybe set up a winter beater board for some powerslides through the ice, but for most, skateboarding in the winter means indoor miniramps and other sheltered skate spots. Lucky for us, Skate Brooklyn (78 St. Marks Place, Brooklyn) has come through with the hook-up for the winter months. We kicked off the winter session on their indoor ramp last Saturday working on some basics like pumping, kickturns and stance. Also had some fun running up the ramp and sliding back down. It's a mellow sesh for beginners, keeping it below the coping, and we got the ramp to ourselves every Saturday from 11am to noon. $20 per class, or $185 for a ten class card (includes season pass for Skate Brooklyn). Come and check it out! Lots to do this weekend!! Friday 12/13 from 8pm till Late Urban Asanas 1-year Anniversary Party Friday night the place to be is at Kat Flower Studio for the Urban Asanas 1-year anniversary party! Hard to believe it's been a year since I joined the UA family and was motivated by Jyll to spread skateboarding to the yoga community. It goes from 8pm till late and it's at 964 Dean Street near the corner of Classon. Come and represent skateyogis!! Saturday 12/14 from 4-7pm Ladies Only Skate Session Skate Brooklyn is hosting the second Girl Riders Organization all-girl skate session. So now you got your whole day planned, come get your skills up at the skateyogi class at 11am, grab some brunch, chill, then roll back in for the beginners sesh at 4pm. I'll be there with the little one for the GRO sesh, she'll be stoked to see you! Click here for the details. Leticia Buffoni Last but not least, to go with the all-girls theme I'd like to share this quick profile of Leticia Buffoni I came across today. She totally rips! She did a Pocahontas themed skate clip on the Berrics back on Thanksgiving and my daughter kept asking to watch the "skateboarding princess". So inspiring for anyone who thinks skateboarding is just for guys. Check it! Namaskate!!! Kevin (ps: we're also doing skateyogi group classes for the kids at Skate Brooklyn on Sundays from 11am to noon. If you or anyone you know might be interested please spread the word. Thanks!)
