Go Skateboarding (Day)! But isn't everyday go skateboarding day?! Yes, but this coming Saturday is June 21st, the summer solstice and also the official Go Skateboarding Day so if you're down to get with the hype come stop by LES starting at 11am for some contests and the skate jam. At 3pm join the giant group skate heading from LES over the bridge to the pop-up park to 50 Kent in Brooklyn. Should be a good time! Last weekend had a taste of the mellower side of skate events with an impromptu skate clinic at the Rutland Street Block Party / Fundraiser for Lefferts Gardens Montessori school. Raffled off a free private lesson with SKATEYOGI and did a hands-on demo to give the preschoolers a taste of skating. Rad private lesson this week at Brower Park with the Urban Asanas fam! Watch out for these girls, they are gonna be killing it in no time! With the summer here there's a bit more daytime availability for private skate lessons, generally starting from 4pm as well as slots on the weekends so email me at [email protected] if you'd like to reserve a few sessions to for you or your kids! Weekend Ramp Classes! There's still spots for this weekend's ramp classes at Skate Brooklyn. Adults on Saturday at 11am. Kids on Sunday: Beginners (Groms) at 11am and Intermediate (Shredders) at 12:30pm. Each class is $30 and limited to 6 students. Click here to register! For the early birds come join us for the Rise and Grind sesh at Thomas Greene Playground (Douglass and 3rd ave). Drop-in $20/student. New Outdoor Class: Parkside Playground, Sundays at 4pm! SKATEYOGI kids classes started last year with a small group from the neighborhood meeting up every Sunday at 4pm so we're gonna bring back the tradition starting this weekend and going through the end of July. We'll meet at the base of the flagpole of the Parkside Playground (Winthrop Street between Bedford and Rogers). This class will be drop-in, no RSVP req'd and is $20/student. See you there! Video of the week: Phil Zwijsen's "Tokyo Days" part Having spent a good amount of time skating in Japan on trips to visit the in-laws it was so rad to see this part posted up of Phil Zwijsen shredding there. In some ways familiar, but with its own unique peculiarities, the skate terrain in Japan is like a hybrid of smooth west coast surfaces with the quick pop, slappy, wallride type obstacles of east coast distinction. Beautifully filmed and without a soundtrack so you can hear the symphony of urethane, concrete and aluminum. Namaskate!
