Kevin's Trick Tip
Shift and Stomp! Winter is a great time to level up your ramp skills if you have access to an indoor skate space like SKATEYOGI. There’s less variables indoors so you can focus on improving techniques you can then take to all the outdoor parks once the weather is nicer. One big milestone trick on ramps is the “drop-in” where you start with the tail perched on the edge of the top of the ramp and tilt down quickly into the ramp surface. This is the move that gets you started at the top with the most potential energy. It’s not that technically challenging but it does take a lot of courage and commitment. Keep these tips in mind as you learn to drop-in! Step 1. SET UP - Place your tail on the edge of the top the ramp with your back wheels touching the inside surface of the ramp Step 2. BALANCE- Put all your weight on your back foot with your front foot hovering out, lightly touching the front bolts with your feet parallel. You should be able to balance here momentarily kind of like tree pose. Step 3. SHIFT - This is the step that is often skipped which leads to falling back. Before you push down on your front foot you need to shift your weight forward into the ramp from your hips up. This puts your weight over the board before you even start to drop down. Step 4. STOMP! - Once you’ve shifted forward you immediately stomp down with your whole body. Keep your knees slightly bent and think of tipping into the ramp and stomping high up on the ramp. Step 5. PUMP - As you roll down the ramp compressed you stand up as you reach the level surface which gives you even more momentum. Smile and think of what trick you’ll do next! See you on the ramp! Kevin
