For most skaters, committing to new tricks can be one of the most difficult parts of skateboarding. Committing to a trick means to fully attempt it (no intentionally putting one foot onto the ground, no bailing, full send!).
It is to be expected that committing can sometimes lead to a fall or two. However for most, this is a necessary step to landing a new trick. Here are some tips to stop the commitment issues and start landing some new tricks! 1. Break the trick down. Most things you do on a skateboard require several muscles to engage and work together in one moment. Before fully committing to a trick, practice each movement individually. 2. Find your mantra or motto. Choose a phrase that fills you with confidence and reminds you of the reason you are trying to land the trick in the first place. Only repeat this phrase to yourself on tries that you plan to commit to. (Examples - Just do it! Right NOW!) 3. Set up a selfie cam! Let your camera roll while you practice the trick. Watching yourself attempt the trick can help you to visualize landing something new. It can also give you a little push to commit, knowing you'll catch the first land on video! 4. Be prepared for the fall. If you think about the way your body might hit the ground before an attempt, it will be easier to catch yourself. Pro tip - Remember everything takes time! Be patient with yourself. If today's not the day then come back to it tomorrow (or during your next session).
