Kevin's Trick Tip: Manuals

A manual is a skateboarding trick that looks similar to doing a wheelie on a bicycle. With a skateboard we are balancing while riding on only 2 wheels (either the front or back two wheels). This is a versatile trick that you can use for combos, doing other tricks before or after the manual on a variety of obstacles. It's a fun challenge for balance and some skaters get really creative with different ways to perform the trick. In the sequence above you can see one of our students riding up a ramp and doing a manual down the incline pad.

Here's a few things to keep in mind when trying a manual:

  1. Approach the trick with both knees bent and the ball of your back foot on the middle of the tail.
  2. As you enter the manual, stand up with the back leg straightened out.
  3. Keep your weight centered on the back foot like a tree pose.
  4. Adjust your balance with both arms and your front leg bent.
  5. Exit the manual by repositioning your weight to the middle of the board.
  6. Bend both knees and ride away with a smile.
