SKATEYOGI weekend forecast 2/6/14: What is a skateyogi?? Plus, ladies-only skate jams coming up!!2/6/2014 So, what is a skateyogi?? It's almost been a year of this whole skateyogi thing and it's been so rad to see this concept of the overlaps between skateboarding and practicing yoga in action. But I think some people still aren't quite sure what happens in class, if it's skateboarding with some yoga or vice versa, so I wanted to take a minute to try and explain. It's a skateboard class that we approach with a similar philosophy that someone might when teaching yoga. That means we're not just trying to "get better" and learn all the tricks. Like you wouldn't show up to yoga just to learn how to stand on your head. I like to say "we don't skate to learn tricks, we do tricks because we skate" and what I mean by that is it's really more about the people you meet, having fun and good vibes. When you're ready to learn new "tricks" you get some tips and encouragement in a supportive environment. For the kids the fun aspect comes more naturally and we focus on positive attitudes and creativity. For the adults it's letting go and cracking a smile after you fall down. And because the class was literally born in and continues to be connected to Urban Asanas there is plenty of yoga play utilizing the props at our disposal be it the skateboards themselves or the curved ramp surfaces. Check your ego at the door, clear our your mind and come sesh with the skateyogis! For the winter it's adults on saturdays at 11am and kids on sundays at 11am. You can also shoot me an email if you're interested in private lessons! Weather-related skate talk For a brief glimmer of this wintry winter we heard the sound of urethane rolling across surfaces as skaters climbed out of their holes to get some outdoor daylight kinda warm sessions going across the city but the respite lasted only a weekend before we were greeted monday morning with another dump and then another one 2 days later, so just as Phil didn't see his shadow it's back to another 6 weeks of seeking shelter at various indoor skateboarding events. Not to reinvent the wheel, NYSkateboarding.com has a pretty good summary of the recurring events you can check out. Much love to all the sponsors of these privately hosted events for keeping the skate scene on the intravenous drip through the nasty weather. But by basic supply and demand economic theory these events tend to be pretty high on the hype scale so if you're not a seasoned thrasher you may end up doing more watching than actual skateboarding. Good news is that the Girl Riders Organization NYC chapter came through with the hook-up for a bunch of ladies-only events at these same skate venues. Skate Brooklyn sesh is this Saturday so come and check it out! Beginners from 4-5:30pm then it's a drop-in shred fest from 5:30-7pm. Here's the rundown: Clip of the Week To continue on with the theme of women in skateboarding this week's clip is the trailer to a rad film called Underexposed: A Women's Skateboarding Documentary. Get stoked! Namaskate! Kevin
