We've come a long way since my early days in the mid 90's skating behind suburban shopping centers and getting chased away by shopkeepers and security guards.
The allure of skating to me back then was the freedom and creativity. With no clear objective the possibilities were endless. But even before that time, skate contests have been a part of our culture as a showcase for pushing what is possible on a skateboard. There are some that think skateboarding in the Olympics dilutes its purity. Personally, I am thrilled thinking of all the people out there – those who will get that initial spark to try skateboarding after seeing it on the world stage. Even as an Olympic sport, skateboarding is so much more and the only true way to understand is to grab a board and join the fun! Namaskate! -Kevin
