Hello! Friday night, July 25 is the night we've been looking forward to for months, maybe even longer! Back in the winter of 2013, talking to Jyll of Urban Asanas after a yoga class, maybe thinking out loud when I mentioned how awesome it would be to teach skateboarding. She immediately cut in "You should! You should teach here!" "Oh, you mean like a kids class at the studio?" But that's not what she meant. She was talking about a skateboarding class for her adult yoga students, and her! So, that's where SKATEYOGI was born, though back then it was just Intro to Skateboarding, which we then started calling the Skate Yogis class. As the idea evolved it was renamed SKATEYOGI to capture the broader concept of anyone caught in the moment of moving meditation, young or old, enjoying the creativity and fun of skateboarding that has kept me pushing all these years. The same continuous practice and flow that exists in yoga. The effortlessness as a result of great effort. And most of all the good vibes and community found in the gathering of people sharing the same passion. So, what can you expect at the Breath and Beats Ramp Jam? For one, the same supportive community you find at any of the previous Urban Asanas Breath and Beats events, whether in the studio or Jyll's backyard, just now in a skate shop with an indoor ramp! We'll be clearing out the ramp and shop at Skate Brooklyn for the yogis to spread out their mats and kick off the event with an hour of yoga led by Jyll along with the beats of her resident DJ. Post-yoga everyone can chill as always with music, food and booze (event is 21+, as I've heard before "the retox after the detox"). Everyone attending will get a raffle ticket for door prizes provided by our sponsors. "But, what if I'm afraid to try skateboarding!?" No worries!! This part is totally optional and will be done in small groups on the ramp. After a year and a half of teaching adult beginners I know there is a lot of fear in trying something as different and new as skateboarding. If you are up to giving it a try we will have skateboards to use, some helmets and pads if you'd like, and we will start from the absolute beginning, how to stand on the board and basic balance tips. I'll hold hands, you can even sit on the board instead, most of all it will be fun in a no pressure environment. As the evening progresses we'll invite the skaters with more experience on the ramp and we can all enjoy the refreshements, each other's company and cheer on the skaters. The full event starts at 7pm. Register here to reserve your spot because space is limited and we'd like to know how much food and drinks to get. If you have any questions about the event you can email me at [email protected]. Hope to see you there! Namaskate!
