Before every SKATEYOGI sesh we sit down on our boards in a circle, catch up with our old friends and get to know our soon-to-be new skate friends. To help the conversation flow sometimes I like to think of a question to go around and ask as we do our introductions. Since this was Valentines Day weekend we all shared "one thing we love about skateboarding". Some of the responses from the kids were specific moves like "sliding down the ramp" or "dropping in", or described the feeling of skateboarding like "the adrenaline rush", "doing crazy tricks", to the more cerebral "I like how complicated it is and how there's lots of possibilities". Even the adults had a cool variety of responses from "freedom" or "it's something different than other things I do" to "now I talk about skateboarding with my other friends that skate". My response each time was about how no matter where you go, whether it's a spot in NYC or some other country, when you meet a fellow skateboarder you can form an instant bond and become friends very easily. Skateboarding is like having millions of friends all over the world, you just haven't gotten to meet them all yet! Next SKATEYOGI series starts this coming weekend! Check the links and details for the next round of series starting this weekend (Feb 21). If there's a week you know you can't make, let me know and we'll figure out a make up class. Spots are starting to fill up so register soon to be sure you get a spot in the class you want. Hit reply with any questions about specific classes. And as always we have the drop-in classes. Adults on Saturdays at 11am; Kids on Sundays at 11am. If you need gear we've got boards, helmets and pads of all sizes for you to borrow. For drop-ins still be sure to save your spot since we cap the number of skaters on the ramp. See you there! Video of the Week: Koichiro Uehara, Osaka Nights Speaking of meeting friends wherever you go, last August on a family trip to Japan I had the chance to go off on solo skate mission for a week to Tokyo and Osaka. Met so many new friends and it's been cool to keep in touch through social media in anticipation of the next visit. One dude I met was Koichiro so I was stoked to see this short video which captures the magic of Osaka and his unique quick foot skate style. I watched this one with the little one and she said "Amazing! I want to slide around like that!" Enjoy! Namaskate!
